about

Series Resurrecta: Serendipity is a user-made campaign for the space shooter Freespace 2 (originally released in 2000). It follows a group of pilots who, in the midst of peacekeeping, stumble across ancient secrets and get caught in someone else’s war – a war that is much bigger than humanity can handle. The overwhelming feeling of this campaign is one of melancholy: a hard-won peace suddenly shattered; the discovery of old secrets which paint an ever darker picture; witnessing destructive battles in an unwinnable war. Do we give in to demons of the past, or forge ahead despite them?

Stylistically, there are some elements in common with the Synesthetic Xenotype series, as this ultimately feeds into the same video game. However, this campaign needed to have music that matched its own atmosphere, and elements that highlighted some unique plot points that set it apart from the canon storylines of Freespace.

There are several pieces written for story-heavy discourse, which needed to convey moods beyond the usual space-battle fare (tracks 3, 5, 7, 8). There are also two possible endings to the campaign, which required their own music (tracks 14, 15). Of course, the usual culprits of Mainhall (track 1), Briefing (tracks 2, 10, 12) and Mission (tracks 4, 6, 9, 11, 13) are also present. In addition to some exotic musical elements for this campaign, the final track of this OST, “Incipit Neo Terra”, introduces some new elements that will hopefully continue in a future OST… Finally, “Forging Through the Black” is a “resurrected” piece of mine – one of the very first tracks I wrote back in 2006, but never released, reimagined for this campaign.

From ominous choirs, to firm orchestral presence, to ethereal vocals, to heavy-hitting drums, to soaring synths, to exotic colours, to folk guitar… This soundtrack is a hodgepodge of styles, and it has been a total blast to write it. It has been wonderful to work with the Series Resurrecta team so far; they have been extremely supportive of my work and full of encouragement. There’s nothing quite like the feeling of a team member telling you that they listened to your new track on repeat for an entire day.
