about

This is the third entry in my "Synesthetic" series, this time with a bit of a twist. Taking ships from the space shooter video game series Freespace as inspiration, I write tracks for use in-game. That means that this is actually a soundtrack of sorts, but has been released to the game's modding community as a general pool of music rather than being attached to a specific mod or campaign.

Small craft (fighters and bombers) result in "Mission" tracks; large capital ships result in "Mainhall" tracks; other ships result in "Briefing" tracks. I have included two extra versions of each "Mission" track: one with the full set of ambience loops, and one with the full set of battle loops.

The tracks are further separated based on the three species of the game: 1-8 based on Terrans, 9-13 based on Vasudans, and 14-19 based on Shivans. Each species has at least one distinct instrument, and their own style. Instrumentation choices were partially guided by the game that a ship first appeared in. Track names are plays on the ships that they were inspired by.

I have only covered about half of the ships I would like to for the entire project, but at 60 minutes of material I decided it was a good spot to take a breather and celebrate with a release! Watch for Part II sometime in the future.

Please visit www.hard-light.net for more information about the current state of Freespace and its ongoing community.

Thanks, as usual, to Rachael for constant support.

Thanks to Anthony, Joe, my parents and other family and friends for helping to share my work.

Thank you to Neon.Deflector for your support and wider exposure you have given me in the music community, especially Synthwave. (On that note, if you like Synthwave be sure to check his stuff out!)

Thanks to Spitfire Audio for a complimentary copy of BBC SO Core. It provides some important life to this work that I would not have managed otherwise. (For others out there, BBC SO Discover is free and really awesome too!)

Very special thanks to the members of the Freespace / HLP community. Hopefully you won't be sick of me by the time I'm done with Part II! The number of names on this list already makes the project a resounding success:
Mobius, EatThePath, Talhydras, MesoTroniK, Colt, Goober, DefCynodont, Orph3u5, Iain Baker, Cobbles, Svedal, Colonel Dekker, MobileForce, bogus, Mito, Darius, Bad Name II: Heretic Boogaloo, NeonShivan, Mad Bomber, Cyborg, Lafiel, Ertanax, Wookiejedi, Nyctaeus, Ngld, Jazzypanda, ReaSilvia, Mblaze, Tomimaki, Dilmah G, Luis Dias.
(Apologies if I missed anyone, I did what I could to compile between HLP Forums and Discord)

Finally, thanks to Volition for the game itself; the amazing group of coders, modders and content creators that have kept it alive for over 20 years; and to Dan Wentz for an inspiring, atmospheric and genre-bending original soundtrack.
