about

Exactly one year prior to the release date of this album, a member of the continuing Freespace community approached me to ask about using some of my work in a user-made campaign. Freespace is a space shooter video game series from the late 1990s, with a community of talented individuals updating the now-open source code and creating a ton of content. But for whatever reason, at the time of this request, there were no active composers hanging around.

This simple request eventually led to creation of several original tracks for that campaign. The appreciation and encouragement of this team then led me to start a bigger, personal project: The Freespace Soundtrack Expansion Project; SExP for short. (If you've ever done mission design with this engine, you'll recognise the term.) I wanted to inject a ton of freely usable music for this community to match the passion and quality I saw in their coding, scripting, mission design, modelling, texturing and writing.

This album picks up exactly where Cataclysm left off. It represents the finalisation of my original vision - and then some - of writing music to cover all of the fighters, bombers, cruisers, corvettes, destroyers and juggernauts in the game. I had an important addition to my toolkit for this album, thanks to a very generous donor, resulting in an even better blend of nostalgia and originality. The cover art (used with permission) is from a concept artist named Kai Ng of LiK Studios, which was also inspired by the game.

Please visit www.hard-light.net for more information about the current state of Freespace and its ongoing community.

To recap the strategy from Part I:

Small craft (fighters and bombers) result in "Mission" tracks; large capital ships result in "Mainhall" tracks; other ships result in "Briefing" tracks. I have included two extra versions of each "Mission" track: one with the full set of ambience loops, and one with the full set of battle loops.

The tracks are further separated based on the three species of the game: 1-6 based on Terrans, 7-13 based on Vasudans, and 14-20 based on Shivans. Tracks 21-23 are based on the Shivan juggernaut, and track 24 is based on a joint Terran-Vasudan juggernaut. Each species has at least one distinct instrument, and their own style. Instrumentation choices were partially guided by the game that a ship first appeared in. Track names are plays on the ships that they were inspired by - in the case of juggernauts, related to their part in the story.
